Why You Have to Overcome Your Fear of Saying No

I used to say yes far too much.

I said yes:

To avoid disappointing people. (Funny, I can’t even remember who these people were — I just know I was afraid of judgment.)

To live up to expectations others had of me.  (Again, who the hell were these people even?)

To keep a status quo going, that truth be told I didn’t even like.  (It was so tempting to stay safe in my suffocating comfort zone, though.)

I finally decided to start saying NO when I left my first marriage. He was a good man, but not the right man for me.  And I’d said yes to him and to our relationship for far too long.

So I finally said no, and I left.

After that, saying no started to get easier, although it took me some time to really let myself say no to everything that poisoned my spirit.

There were quite a few layers of conditioning I was unearthing, apparently.

After saying no to my second marriage and then several subsequent years of following what I thought was right for me I realized something:

I was only saying no to things that were safe to say no to.  I was still ignoring what was suffocating and slowly killing me.

I finally realized something essential.

You cannot let in what you really want until you start saying NO to everything you really don’t want.

That doesn’t mean you actively resist those things.  In fact, that will only keep your attention upon them longer.

Rather, thank what you no longer want for the part it played in your evolution, then emotionally release it and turn all of your attention and energy to what you do want.

The key to remember is this:  there will be a transition period.

This transition period is when you have to dig deep, keep your focus on where you are going, and not let yourself become discouraged.

Change can take time — but it takes less time if you stay motivated, expectant, and excited about what’s to come.

It starts, though, with deciding what you are no longer available for and SAY NO TO IT.

What do you need to say no to right now?

I’d love to hear from you.  Leave a comment or send me a message.

With love,
