The #1 Thing You Need to Do When Overwhelm Strikes (it’s not what you think)

Perhaps you know the scene:

You’ve set the goals, created the intentions, you’re doing the damn thing. Taking action. Doing the inner work. Taking more action. Saying hell no to whatever isn’t a fvck yes. More action. You’re seeing some progress.

But not what you’d like to see. And not only that, you’re feeling overwhelmed.

You know this state, and it’s a tad bit scary because you know in your heart that forcing things never works out well in the long run.

But that overwhelm… it’s really making you want to push harder. To push against all that doesn’t seem to be working in your favor. The lure of using that big burst of frustration stemming from the overwhelm to bulldoze through everything in your way is so, so enticing.

That’s how you get stuck in the cycle.

And we are cycle breakers. So none of that.

Instead, use that powerful energy in a way that serves you.

Go. Bigger.

Now I know, going bigger can seem counterintuitive when you’re already feeling overwhelmed.

However.

Going bigger actually opens up channels and opportunities you can’t see from your current vantage point, gives you a renewed sense of energy, and uses the pent up frustration in a powerful, explosive way — that serves you.

The trick, though, is that before you saddle up and go bigger, you have to get back to basics.

For example, refocusing your reticular activating system.

The RAS is that funky little part of your brain that causes you to, for example, see the car you just bought everywhere. Or, if you hear something mentioned, all of a sudden you’ll see that everywhere. It’s like Facebook ads in our brains, really.

The importance of this cannot be overstated. Because you get to program the RAS.

So, when overwhelm hits, the first thing you need to do before taking bigger, bolder action, is to become more fierce — and re-program what the RAS is revealing to you.

1 Revisit your goals. How will you feel when you exceed them?

2 Create a scene in your mind that implies you’ve already exceeded them. Write it down in detail.

3 Read that scene to yourself a few times a day. Feel into the energy of it. Begin to notice anything AT ALL in your present environment that has the essence of that scene.

Now you’re ready to take that bigger, bolder action.

You’ll begin to get hits of inspiration as to what to do next. If you don’t feel the hits coming, ask yourself: “But if I DID feel inspired, what action would I take?” Trust the answer you get and go do the damn thing.

PS.

What I have found in all of my grad degree training, continuing education, working with children for almost ten years, working with clients over the last 6 1/2 years, and in my own personal transformations

is that the most powerful alchemy occurs

when we UNLEARN.

It’s not about breaking old habits and creating new habits. And let’s recall we don’t actually break habits we just create replacement habits and practice those more often.

But the replacement habits?

The ones that stick?

Are really just us behaving in ways that speak to our true nature. So all we have done

is UNLEARN

all the conditioning that covered up

who we truly are.
